In 2009 a family rented an apartment in a house in Poughkeepsie. In January of 2011 their 18-month-old child had a routine blood screening and elevated lead levels were noted. This was from paint in the apartment. The Department of Health directed the landlords to repaint the apartment. They took too long to comply. The family cleaned up any paint chips and dust and the lead levels dropped. A lawsuit was started and was settled just before trial for $60,000. Thankfully, the now 8-year-old child does not have any long-term deficits.
