$19.8M verdict against doctor thrown out
GOSHEN – An appeals court has thrown out a jury’s $19.8 million verdict against a local doctor, finding that trial evidence against Dr. Moinuddin Ahmed failed to show he committed malpractice.
The plaintiff, Dianne Manganiello, of Montague, N.J., went to the Bon Secours Community Hospital emergency department in 2004 with very low sodium levels related to a chronic medical condition. According to the appellate decision, a nurse misread a doctor’s orders and infused Manganiello too quickly with a concentrated saline, which led to a severe brain injury. Manganiello and her husband sued.
